Dovel & Luner Files Lawsuit Against Coppertone

Press Release

SANTA MONICA – On Monday, Dovel & Luner filed a class action lawsuit against Beiersdorf, Inc., the makers of Coppertone Sport Mineral FACE products. The lawsuit alleges that Coppertone deceived and overcharged consumers by putting the same sunscreen into two different bottles, charging twice as much for “FACE” sunscreen.

The Complaint, filed in the United States District Court of Connecticut, alleges that Coppertone violated the consumer protection laws of numerous states, including California’s Unfair Competition Law and False Advertising Law.

Coppertone Sport Mineral Face Sunscreen

Coppertone sells both Coppertone Sport Mineral sunscreen and Coppertone Sport Mineral FACE sunscreen. According to the lawsuit, Coppertone FACE sunscreen “is identical to regular Coppertone Sport Mineral, which costs half as much.”

The complaint states “[Coppertone] is tricking consumers into thinking they are buying sunscreen lotion especially formulated for the face, when in reality, they just buying regular Sport Mineral sunscreen in a smaller—and far more expensive—bottle.”

“Coppertone’s practice of charging a price premium for identical sunscreen is unfair and misleading,” said Simon Franzini of Dovel & Luner. “Plaintiffs brought this case to protect the hundreds of thousands of U.S. consumers who purchase Coppertone FACE products.”
