What are Olympus scopes used for?
The Olympus Corporation manufactures endoscopic devices and cleaning equipment among other medical and surgical devices.
Endoscopes and other similar medical devices are long flexible tubes with a light and camera, designed to view internal organs and structures. These tools are used to diagnose and treat various conditions. Different scopes are used for different parts of the body.
For example, various scope procedures can include:
- Upper endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
- Bronchoscopy
- Enteroscopy
- Gastroscopy
These flexible scope devices are often meant to be reused or “reprocessed” for future procedures after disinfection. However, warnings and recalls say that some parts of some Olympus scope devices can be difficult to properly disinfect. Exposure to potentially contaminated scopes and accessories can lead to serious patient infection.
What injuries are linked to Olympus scopes?
Serious injuries related to potentially defective scopes include:
- Sepsis
- Organ failure
- Perforation
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- HIV
- Severe infection
